It's not too common now but have you ever joined a site that required your account to be approved by a staff member? Was it annoying?

I refuse to join a site where I have to wait for approval. (n)

I've joined a forum that had admin approval and then forgot to return when they finally approved me. If they just let me validate my account through email I would have been there posting right after I joined.

I've signed up to a few and then pretty much forgotten about them as soon as I see they require approval. Thankfully though you're right, I don't see these kinds of processes too often these days.

I decided to stealthily employ such a tactic due to spam (even with various automated anti-spam options).

An account doesn't go for approval itself, but the first 5 posts by an account do.

That seems to be a better method than manually approving registrations I guess. The only thing I would be worried about is potentially annoying someone who wants to take part in a lot of discussions right away.

I guess if you're approving the posts without much of a delay it's not too problematic.

It wouldn't be too bad if there were multiple staff members that could approve of it, especially if the staff was international. A lot of the time it's one person. So if you register when they're at work, or in bed, you gotta wait for them to wake up or go home to get approved.

That would be a person like me. When I join, I join to post and not to sit around waiting for anything to get approved.

And then you get some situations where the software doesn't give you a clear indication that there are members awaiting approval. Then you have to go emailing them to remind them

I'm having to manually approve registrations on a site I run and it's annoying to me to be on that end. I can only imagine the annoyance by the people signing up. I wish the owner would get our email fixed soon. It's been months now :(

I've registered on plenty of sites that require manual approval. It's not a big deal when an admin/mod is online, but it's irritating if you end up having to wait a little while.
