Well, there's no way to go back to the 1800s, but in the case of an EMP disaster, that would be the only solution. Anyway, the power grids in many nations are not prepared, but that should be the top priority. Also, and sorry to sound like someone off the movie Red Dawn, but national defense should take #1 priority, even over climate change, anti-poverty programs and education.

I think were too dependent on it, but then again look at how far we've gotten with it. As much as it does help us, I believe that there could be some times when we need less of it and some times when we need more.

We're pretty fucked if anything happens to our grid, credit card machines can go down and I swear everyone panics from that alone. One bad day from the sun and it is game over.

All I can say is learn some farming or have a farming friend.

I agree that we are too dependent on tech for critical infrastructure, but totally disagree with the part about defense.

Climate change is more important than defense because it will kill us all regardless of nationality.
Anti-poverty is more important because poverty and inequality are driving factor in creating conflicts in the first place.
Education is more important, because a more educated populous will hopefully be less inclined to think that shooting and bombing each other is a good idea.

'national' defense protects a human construct, borders and nationalities that ultimately mean basically nothing, all of the other things affect actual lives and human wellbeing.

Climate change in my country is one of the most extreme changes in the entire world. Our forest were taken down by the brazilian farmers.. the even export our wood as theirs lol.

We certainly need something like this to happen to take conscience of our actions though, i wouldn't mind spending 5 years like the old days, even though most of my hobbies depend on a machine.

Yes, we would be hurting without technology. The whole point of it is that we use technology to live better lives. No one wants to live without it. Technology in the medical field has saved many lives, we need cars to get around, phones in case of emergency, clean water so we don't get sick, and on and on that list goes. I think a lot of people would be unhappy without it.

Some of those things I agree with, medical tech and clean water for example, but they are not universal and only available to the richest of the world societies.

On the other hand, we don't all need private cars to get around, efficient public transport would be better, and I'm not sure that having a mobile phone and being expected to answer it at any moment wherever you are and whatever you are doing probably isn't great for our mental health at all.

As somebody with ADHD I struggle with a mobile device and being "switched on" for friends. I quite often have my messenger apps muted and I get anxious about what people expect from me and what I expect from others. As a result, I have shut myself off from quite a lot of social situations and pretty much have 1 or 2 online friends these days and not much else.

I'm one of those who are into Prepping. I don't go overboard but I do make sure we are well-stocked. Have books (physical books, not kindle if we don't have power or batteries) for health, nature, etc. Will it be hard if we lost power? Oh yeah! We are dependent on it. Too dependent on technology! Even though I unplug often, I am used to being online. Posting on forums. Emailing family & friends. But I could learn to live without it. We did before. I shudder at the commercials, Alexa write this, Alexa turn the lights on/off. Kids don't even know their own phone numbers. If they lost their cell phone, they would be hurting!

I agree that defence is important but I don't think it has to be the most important thing that we focus on. Your national defence will be pretty useless when climate change or poverty means there aren't any people to save.

We are definitely too dependent on tech though.

Yes, EMP is very dangerous for any technology that's powered electronically. But, today we have EMP blocker. Technically, technology is getting better and better by the day. Although, I believe that it's going to be the end of us too.

I do believe that you can make a solid argument that we are too dependent on it, but humans have this amazing ability to adapt and overcome and I can't help but feel we would be just fine should it all come crashing down one day. Probably not that day, but years after will just be humans doing human things. Using what we have access to in order to excel our species is what we do.

Back in the 80s we played outside daily for hours and found things to do, now days all people do even in public is buried their heads in a phone.

This is the one major issue I personally have with tech. I don't really have too much input as to the outside stuff as that is a lot to do with parenting IMO and is not something that I feel is truly tech-based, but people (mostly adults) being buried in their phones during conversations, meetings, classes, etc., etc. drives me insane. I don't see it being our doom, but I don't understand how people find it to be appropriate.

I agree with this. Kids now-a-days only care about their phones, video games, snap chat! They really need to get out, ride a bike, learn to skateboard.. If the national grid goes offline, these kids will loose their minds.

And really all governments need to update the infrastructure of their grids asap. Most are vulnerable to dirty bombs, hacks and worst.

Technology does have its uses but I will admit that as a society, we have become more dependent on it than we probably should have done. Unfortunately, due to how dependent we are on it, it's a money maker and companies will create technology that they know we will use to be able to make a profit.

We probably should use it less than we do.
