Considering how many different developments are coming out of Ukraine, I think it might be best to just combine it all into one thread.

As far as I'm aware, I don't believe we have any users from the area but if you see this, I hope you are safe!

I feel the same way. I can't fathom what it's like to have your own country invaded by another and to see everything you ever knew growing up in that country to be threatened. I can't imagine what the people there are feeling and going through. But I know for certain it has to be very upsetting.

I've been watching this thing unfold since 2014 to be honest. There's been news clippings and media popping up on it on YouTube through the 7 years that it's progressed.

For those that didn't know.

Ukraine used to be part of the Soviet Union and gained their independence in the early 90's and Russia invaded them in 2014. This is nothing new. Russia doesn't want Ukraine becoming part of NATO. So rather than let that happen, the Russian Federation will just re assimilate the country back into Russia.

Late in 2021 he began deploying big numbers of Russian troops close to Ukraine's borders. Then this week he scrapped a 2015 peace deal for the east and recognised areas under rebel control as independent.
Russia has long resisted Ukraine's move towards the European Union and the West's defensive military alliance Nato. Announcing Russia's invasion, he accused Nato of threatening "our historic future as a nation".

When it started, Obama remained inactive on the issue.

But Obama would not arm the Ukrainians. It was not until Donald Trump became president that they were provided with serious defensive weaponry, though it would obviously never be enough if Putin decided to mass Russia’s far superior forces and invade — which he waited to do until Obama’s vice-president, Joe Biden, was in the Oval Office.

I contended in 2014 that “We should be arming the Ukrainians not only because it is in our national interest to repel Putin’s ambitions, but also because we are the ones who disarmed the Ukrainians.” I remain convinced that Obama would not arm Ukraine because, as a senator, he had spearheaded the congressional effort to disarm Ukraine.

Trump supports Russia's decision to invade.

"Putin is now saying, 'It’s independent,' a large section of Ukraine. I said, 'How smart is that?' And he’s going to go in and be a peacekeeper," Trump added.

Russia's recognition of the separatist-controlled regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine have sparked widespread condemnation in the West. Putin also announced that he would be sending Russian troops into the regions for "peacekeeping purposes."

Trump also suggested the U.S. should deploy a similar "peace force" to the U.S.-Mexico border.

Is only Russia doing this? Anyone else backing them up?
Belarus were reportedly backing them, but it's come to light that Russia was simply sending troops in through their borders, so it does appear to just be Russia at this point in time.

No one nation can take on the world, Russia is looking at destruction at that point.
Agreed, I'm sure there's someone helping them somewhere, whether it's Belarus or one (or more) of the other former Soviet countries. It would be foolish to go it alone.

After some quick Googling, Russia's supposed to have about 900,000 active military members to Ukraine's reported 350,000, roughly 3 to 1 in Russia's favor. Likewise, Ukraine's reporting losses of just under 200 to Russia's 1000, or 5 to 1 in Ukraine's favor.

If Ukraine can keep this up, they could actually win. Admittedly, that's assuming Russia doesn't simply carpet bomb Ukraine into glass, but still...

I hate to root for the loss of human life, but come on Ukraine!

Lukashenko (the leader of Belarus) is a huge fan of Putin, and Belarus will never say no to anything that Russia says or asks. Russia has given the Lukashenko regime. which in any democratic world should definitely not be in power at this point, huge support over the years for exactly this reason.

That makes a lot of sense, keep your puppets happy.

Horrible situation and such a difficult one to fix. Russia are completely in the wrong but we can't start a world war, hopefully the economic sanctions help but it's going to take time...time which i worry Ukraine don't have.

I've seen tanks with soviet flags waving around Kiev, i do think that is somehow a display of disrespect of Ukraine's sovereignity and also Russia knows that they banned ALL forms of communism nostalgia, no USSR memorabilia allowed as well, they banned the communist party too.

There's also something to debate, actual Ukraine's territory has been gifted by Lenin during the first years of the Soviet Union, they never actually had a conversation with Russia about those lands that historically were part of the Russian Empire.

This shouldn't be happening in 2022, there's got to be better ways of resolving a conflict.

Whatever sanctions the UK and Europe impose, Russia is going to hit back. We'll be feeling the effects of this for some time, I fear.

Yeah, oil will be much more expensive and also food shortage incoming. Pretty sad, we've been through a lot during this pandemic era..
