Hey Techies,

I am pretty sure if you are an Apple fan, you have seen their upcoming product line, or at least watched WWDC2020. One thing that stuck out to me; Apple Silicon.

Apple will be manufacturing their own ARM-processor. The Apple Ecosystem just received an upgrade?. This was my favorite part of WWDC. My favorite part of Apple is also their Ecosystem.

The Apple Silicon will allow for iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS apps to be backwards compatible without ANY changes made by the developer. Their Ecosystem is paving the way to the future. Hate Apple all you want, when they follow through with something, it is a great product.

The actual specifications of the Chip have not been released, which is why I am skeptical. “Leakers” have said it will be more powerful than the Intel chips that were in the MacBook’s previously. If that is true, Apple can disrupt the “duopoly” that Microsoft and Intel have on the PC market.

Apple wants better Battery management, more powerful Mac’s, Universal apps, and improved gaming support. Let’s hope they can execute this.

Possible issues that I see:

  • Developer Support: What if current Mac Developers do not want to support the Intel chips + the new Silicon chips simultaneously. This can cause issues for consumers who purchased the Mac’s this year.
  • Not Powerful: If they are replacing the powerful Intel CPU’s that are in iMacs with a less-powerful ARM chip, will the iMac’s be worth it for professionals?
  • Overheating: This will be their first chip manufactured in a long time. MacBooks already have overheating issues, I would not want to see that worsen.
What do you guys think of the new chip? Are you excited? Do you want Apple to stick with Intel?

I'm very happy they are leaving Intel and I hope they never go back.

Apple has already proven that they can create faster chips every single year when it comes to the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, etc etc. They have gotten tired of waiting on Intel to release faster products but also have gotten tired of Intels horrible heat management on their chips (this is why if you have a macbook air or pro it gets super hot and thermal throttles).

I personally would not be concerned about developers not wanting to support both Silicon and Intel. As long as there is high demand for PCs (which will not have Silicon chips in them unless Apple lets other manufacturers put them in) their teams would probably support both?

As someone who is not a dev and foreign to this type of thing, I could be totally off base here, but I trust the good people of the community here will correct me if I am wrong ;)

This is true, but also MacBooks imo have very bad heat dissipation. But with any ARM chip, heat management is better. I can't wait to see what they bring.

Sorry if I mistyped above, but I meant developers will not support Intel Apple Products for long.

Ahh, that could've been my misunderstanding. :D
