Hey everyone,
So many people say traditional forums are like ‘the echo chambers of the internet’ which I disagree.

I personally hate Reddit and discord is good but I only use it as a chat, What does everyone else think?

(The newer gens 96+ say this)

do you agree or disagree?

Forums have certainly been kneecapped thanks to facebook, discord and guilded, But they are still going, just not as strong as they once used to.
The ‘Facebook killed forums’ has definitely been a saying since 2010.

hopefully forums still continue in to the future fingers crossed.

there’s a few active forums so there’s still hope.

I'm going to ignore Discord because I honestly don't use it as much as I do forums and Reddit. Reddit definitely gets the most of my attention although I don't post much. It's great to just keep up with interesting topics and the world.

I used to say that social media didn't really kill forums but only took a bit of attention away from them. But it's hard to argue against it, to be honest. Even I don't post as much on forums anymore. I just hang around on a few and spend most of my time on DH.

Discord definitely doesn’t replace forums it’s a chat & voice app.

As for Reddit, I dislike their karma feature, You basically get banned if someone disagrees with you due to them disliking your post just my personal opinion though,

As for Facebook that slowly started killing forums in 2010 and it’s sad :(

I started my forum in the wrong decade I believe.

I don't mind the karma thing, to be honest. Unless you're in a community of people that want each other to agree with each other, it's not too bad. Helps keep the spam and useless replies at the bottom.

It's also important to remember that there were a lot of popular forums back then. It wasn't as simple as just starting a forum and it automatically being popular. Would probably still require a lot of hard work like how it is now.

Yeh this is one thing I think is pretty neat about it, actual posts & shitposts are very clearly separated but I still have the option to look at the shitposts if I want.

I do prefer forums overall also, reddit itself is okay but every subreddit I subscribe to is kinda trash and just defaults to posting reactionary crap (not even political but just very typical stuff thats known to wind that particular subreddit up), so I don't use it too much.

I think really anywhere on the internet has the potential to become an echo chamber, plenty of forums out there run by people who ban anything they dont like.

I guess it does have its cons & prons, It definitely stops the trolls ?

I don’t think forums are dead when you think about it, There’s a lot of competition,
I use to support someone Twitch Stream (no longer friends) and he use to struggle to get 20 views, He be lucky if he did that’s a modern website, TWITCH!
I know a few active forums.

I think the karma is nice for subreddits where people go for advice on stuff, but I tend to see it abused a lot for hive mind discussion.

On second thought, forums are definitely less popular since there’s social media giants now but I don’t see forums going anywhere though as long as there’s people like us.

Forums are still the only platform that allows deep organised discussions.

Don't get me started on the stupid reposts either. The karma system has unfortunately created a group of people that are addicted to getting as many points as possible so they just post any old crap to get to the top

Someone on there disagreed with my opinion (each to their own) but as a result I got banned.

The moderators of some subreddits seem to be a little power-hungry, unfortunately. Doesn't help that most of the mods in the big subreddits don't get paid so you get the shitty ones applying for the positions.

I’ve experienced that too, it turned my off the app so I don’t use it now.

That’s definitely not true. The other platforms are fully capable, forums just do it in a format that you prefer.
Twitter only allows a certain number of characters.

messenger & discord discussions get lost easily and Facebook can get messy and hard to find old discussions.

I’m not saying they’re not good for discussions but social media is designed for in the moment style discussions,
Mark Zuckerberg confirmed this.

every platform allows deep discussions but like a file cabinet style then forums are the only platform type that do it, Discord came close but not as perfect.

So yes it does depend on what layout style someone prefers, I like both personally but prefer forums.
