Food stamp shaming?

If they're clearly gaming the system, then yeah, it's wrong, but you should NEVER shame someone for using food stamps. I've been there, it's not fun. Even if they look well off, it doesn't mean they are.

No one has the right to shame others for being on food stamps. It's not anyone's business and how are you even going to prove they are cheating the system?

It’s one of those things where you actually have to know the person. Especially if they’re a family member. If you lived in a town that has a huge welfare percentage, people are also pretty loose lipped about how they’re abusing the system.

So I personally find it hard to not judge someone if they’re bragging about it in a public place.

If they're cheating the system then it's not right IMO. However how can you tell if a stranger is abusing them? If they truly need them because they cannot work due to disabilities, then there's no reason to shame them. One of my friends cannot work and relies on food stamps to get his food.

Judging and shaming are two different things. Would you have the nerve to shame them as being shown in the OP video?

I wouldn’t do it to some random person I don’t know, unless they were bragging about it in public. I wouldn’t steal their steak though.

We don't have food stamps in the UK so it's not really something I see but I don't see it any different to just using coupons to get money off food. Don't see the issue really, we all have to eat.

The difference between food stamps and coupons is that food stamps is a government program where they give X amount of dollars to people to spend on food (it's actually called EBT now, food stamps are the old school term), and, like welfare, comes out of people's tax dollars. It's like a welfare check, except only for groceries.

Coupons are usually handed out by the store it applies to for discounts on their products.

It's only controversial for people because of it being a government program funded by taxes, and is fairly easy program for people who don't need it to abuse. Though I'd be disingenuous to give you an accurate percentage of people who are abusing it.

So I presume welfare is like the benefits system in the UK where people that don't make enough, get a certain amount of money from the government. Are there people that get food stamps that don't get welfare checks?

Yeah, welfare gives you X amount of money based on your income level.

I'm not sure if you can get food stamps and welfare. I've never been on the program, so I'm just going off of classmates. I just know that there's two different programs, and have different qualifications. I just don't think you get both.

I believe it's called Welfare in the USA and everything that assists a family is under that name, so even if someone says welfare or food stamps, it's basically the same thing.

They’re technically different programs, welfare gives you X amount of money a month if you make below a specific income, and food stamps are the same, except the money gets deposited to a card that can only be used for food. That’s why you hear about welfare checks and food stamps.

While it’s “free money” from the government, they work a bit differently.

I'm on food stamps and it comes in handy. My state cut them down though. I was getting over $300 a month which was a life saver when I was working part time to support me and my g/f living on our own. I now get $100 a month and I'm NOT complaining.

I don't shame anyone for anything. Everyone has their issues.

No matter how much I may disagree with anyone I am not the type to shame them. It's not my place to judge. Exception being is if someone is being hurt then I would definitely intervene if I am in a position to do so, for food stamps though? No way.

If you're "cheating the system" I believe that you're suffering somewhere in life to feel like you have to survive by doing that. I grew up on food stamps but it became a personal goal for me to never have to rely on it as an adult. I totally understand how some families have to - that was just a personal decision for me and I've been blessed over the years.

Cool, I'm glad you are at a point where you are self sustaining!

Shaming someone for their financial situation is obviously never a good thing. Take care of your own business and let others do the same.
Yes agreed. Wise words.

Here in Australia it’s called Centrelink, basically they give you money for legit reasons, I’m currently struggling to find work, hopefully with my site and stuff it should help now that I can put that on a resume.

But people cheating the system and that then that’s a different story but if they’re on it for legit reasons since we all struggle then we should never shame them.
