It depends on both how tightly you wear them.

What's your preference and why?

It depends on what I'm doing while listening to music. If my 4 year old is around I like to listen to music without headphones just so I can make sure to be able to hear her at all times. If I'm working out, I prefer ear buds. If I'm winding down for the evening or if I'm working I like the over-the-ear headphones because they do an excellent job at cancelling out noise and there's something about covering my ears entirely that allows me to just focus on what I'm working on or the tune I'm listening to.

Good headphones are much better. For the same quality of sound, they will cost less. Also, the best headphones will be superior to the best earbuds. Sound isolation, comfort and Bluetooth.

Agreed. Plus I hate stuff being "in" my ear because it gets wax all over it.
