The price of a one-month Gold membership is increasing by $1, and the price of a three-month membership is increasing by $5 "or the equivalent amount in your local market". Microsoft has yet to publish the changes in pounds. We've asked for clarification.

This means the new pricing will be one month for $10.99, three months for $29.99, and six months for $59.99. That means a year of Xbox Live Gold in the US is now $120.

Messages warning of the price hike are being sent out to subscribers now, and Microsoft promised it won't adjust the pricing until at least 45 days after you receive these messages.

If you're an existing 12-month or six-month Xbox Live Gold member, there is no change, and if you renew your membership, it will renew at the current price.

"Periodically, we assess the value and pricing of our services to reflect changes in regional marketplaces and to continue to invest in the Xbox community," Microsoft said.

"We'll be making price adjustments for Xbox Live Gold in select markets. In many markets, the price of Xbox Live Gold has not changed for years and in some markets, it hasn't changed for over 10 years."

They can do this because of the new console and Microsoft knows everyone will pay it without much protest. New console means steeper price. Would I want to pay it? Nope and I'm speaking from past experiences. I quit paying for PlayStation PlUS because when I was paying for it, I never used it.

They actually turned around and reversed their decision before I went to bed last night.

Microsoft has reversed its controversial Xbox Live price increase. The company announced a price hike on Friday that would have doubled the cost of a yearly subscription to the service, which is required to play games online on Xbox consoles, to $120 for many users. Now, though, Microsoft says the price will stay the same.

Beyond that, Microsoft has decided to bring Xbox Live in line with Sony and Nintendo’s online services by dropping the subscription requirement for free-to-play games. Popular free-to-play titles like Fortnite are playable on PlayStation consoles and the Nintendo Switch without an online subscription, but you still need one for Xbox consoles; Microsoft says it’s “working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.”

And that's just ripped. They know that people have no option but to buy and so they put the prices up higher so that they can earn and make money.

Read my reply. They backtracked and actually went the other way, giving people without a subscription the ability to download and play the free to play games.

How long that will last though.
Probably a while. They won't jump to try it again so soon. They would lose too many customers. $120 for a year is ridiculous. I'm already paying the $15 or whatever it is a month for their ultimate game pass.

Not sure why they backed off, the price hike seem fairish... Though people are struggling on money.
My knowledge of the Xbox side is quite poor so feel free to correct me guys but this price hike was for just Xbox Live Gold and doesn't include the Xbox Game Pass right?

If that is the case, $120 a year is way too much. I complain about having to pay around $40-45 a year for my PS Plus.

Yes. It was geared toward those who still had XBL, it didn't mention a change in the pricing model for Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate. I think their plan was to completely phase out XBL and force people to use Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate, the subscription based plans they have now.

it's going to get that high eventually. Bandwidth and more server costs will require that.
Maybe eventually but not for a very very long time. There just isn't enough justification for such a big price hike right now.

And it's not good for us PS Plus members because eventually Sony will increase it if they see Microsoft getting away with it
