Mortal Kombat is a mysterious, intergalactic tournament of ancient martial arts. Shaolin Monk Liu Kang, from Earth, gets invited as a competitor.

Release date: April 16, 2021

I really hope this movie is better than the first 2 from the 90's. The CGI and special effects looks terrible in the first one. It did not age well at all. The source material was largely ignored and I believe that's where both films failed horribly at.

While SOME of the acting was good. We see that the best actors are Christopher Lambert, Bridget Wilson, Linden Ashley, Trevor Goddard, and Cary Tagawa. I wasn't at all impressed with Robin Shou or Talisa Soto's performance in the film. They didn't capture their roles very well in my opinion.

Another thing that disappointed me, and you should consider it as a major factor because the games heavily relied on it. The film didn't capture the violence of the games themselves. The violence was very soft and the fatalities came with a lot of censorship in the movie. In fact the tournament fights were extremely short and very bland.

The film also didn't go with the storyline of the games as they killed off Cary Tagawa's Shang Tsung and he's a reoccurring villain in the games. Shang Tsung doesn't get killed off until the 9th game and that was long after this movie was made.

They also haphazardly killed of Trevor Goddard's Kano, and he's reoccurring as well. These villains are vital for the plotlines in the games. They behave as a McGuffin to bring things into perspective for the audience. Shang Tsung has caused so much shit and lead the protagonists in the games to fight some of the most evil and sinister villains, in the hopes that villain kills them for him, just because Shang Tsung wants more power. We really didn't see that in the movies because whoever directed and produced the movies obviously didn't play the games, EVER.

Scorpion should have been the one to kill off Bi Han who was the first Sub Zero, who would later become the wraith, Noob Saibot. Instead, Bi Han gets killed off by Robin Shou's Lou Kang. Scorpion isn't defeated by Johnny Cage in the first tournament in the games. His only purpose in the tournament was to wack Sub-Zero, which he achieved.

What's worse is they made yet another film and it did not deliver. It made no sense and didn't follow the games either. In fact it failed in every way imaginable and had no direction within it's own plot. It was all over the place. It was a giant mess. They even went so far to say that Raiden and Emperor Shou Kahn were brothers and that was the most BS writing ever. None of the fans accepted that because it's not canon to the game lore.

So going back to this movie. I really hope it lives up to the lore of the games and none of the earlier movies are used as a reference. I'm all for the games being used a reference. But I think it's very important to follow the source material.

This month, EW is offering exclusive looks at more than two dozen of 2021's most anticipated movies. Check out more of our preview here.

When you think of Mortal Kombat, you think of blood. Buckets of it. That kind of gruesome splatter that comes from "kali ma shakti de"-ing an opponent in a savage fight to the death. But blood, as director Simon McQuoid thought of it for the upcoming video-game-inspired movie reboot, has many meanings. "Blood represents family," he tells EW. "Blood represents a connection. Blood represents who we are. Without getting too overcomplicated, what we did is use blood executionally." And it starts flowing right from the get-go.

If this new take on Mortal Kombat, revealed in EW's exclusive first-look photos, is a "blood universe," then McQuoid says the kunai blade lies at its center. It's the signature weapon of fan-favorite game character Hanzo Hasashi, a.k.a. Scorpion, played by The Wolverine and The Twilight Samurai star Hiroyuki Sanada. "We did a bit of research and the kunai is actually an ancient Japanese gardening tool," the director explains. "So, one of the earliest shots in the movie is the kunai blade being used as a gardening tool by Hanzo's wife."

Looking at the cast. I'm already disappointed. Mileena is a clone of Katana who is from Edenia. They both look like this. The actress they picked doesn't look a damn thing like the character. If they can't try to resemble what they look like then they're not being faithful to the game franchise. They're making new mistakes. At least with the 90's cast, they tried to make them look alike.

Sisi Stringer as Mileena.

I could see her being as Jade or Jacqui Briggs. But she's far from being Mileena in any way. The rest of the cast I am comfortable with.

The reason why I'm being harsh with this movie because I think if they're going to do it. At least get it right this time because the last 2 films sucked.

Well, I won't disagree. I'm waiting for the studio to be called out for not casting an Asian-American actress in the role of a clearly Asian oriented character.

Who knows..

Yeah, when they cast Scarlet Johansen in Ghost of Shell, the studio got slammed and that movie bombed in the box office. People felt they should have had a Japanese cast for the movie because, it's in Japan. Before that, they made the same mistakes with the Dragon Ball movie and that movie was a complete failure too.

So aside from all of that. I'm going to wait for the ratings and reviews. If this movie gets slammed with poor ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, I'll ignore this movie and never watch it. It'll be WB's fault for yet again ignoring the source material. BUT then again, I may just ignore this film entirely because I feel they've already screwed it up.

If I had it my way, I'd rather have the movie take place in 1992 and do the first tournament on Shang Tsung's island. Maybe they could have had the first set of movies focus on the tournaments and plotlines from the games to those who don't play them. There's enough source material through the 18 existing games that they can work with. But no. That's obviously too much effort to do this right.

You're speaking from a standpoint of common sense bro, you've already lost.

I don't think Simon McQuoid was a good choice for this movie. He's an inexperienced director whose only experience is television commercials. His work shows in the film and no that's not a good thing. It's even worse if you look up the screen writers. They have no previous works in any major franchise or movies that did well in the box office except for one screen writer who worked on Godzilla and WonderWoman 2.

I've heard that a lot of people are happy with the trailer and the fact that it's going in a rated R direction.

From what I've noticed. The trailer has garnered a lot of positivity from people on Youtube. The movie is obviously an alternate plotline. I'll sit back and watch the ratings and see how good it does.

You can't judge it too much on the director and the fact that it isn't how you'd do it. You have to give the director and cast a chance.

I humored you. Before I go any further. I did give this movie a chance. I invested 51 minutes and 57 seconds of my time into this movie. I couldn't finish it, didn't want to finish it. I couldn't invest another minute of my time on it. That's an hour of my life that I wasted on this. I hated it. Just as I knew I would. My opinion is in agreement with the Youtuber BruskPoet. He has some very valid points. The characters were underdeveloped. The casting was wrong. The story was bad. The fights were bad. The dialogue and acting was horrible.

Are you sure you went into this with an open mind? I respect your opinion of the movie; but, I quite enjoyed it. I felt that it had enough of a baseline story to set up the universe for the possibility of a sequel. Regardless, that's the beauty of film - you can hate it while I enjoy it.

I certainly tried. I really wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt. And who knows. I might have still lost interest in it whether I played the games or not.

What I was wanting was a Mortal Kombat movie that was very close to the source material and it didn't deliver on that. It took it in the complete opposite direction. Now I get that some people really liked the idea of a Mortal Kombat movie and seeing Sub Zero and Scorpion fight. But that's not good enough for me.

This movie seemed to rely more on Scorpion and Subzero having a vendetta. That was their main argument in this movie. It didn't even focus on the Tournament at hand and it downplayed a lot of characters.

That's understandable and I get not everyone cares about the source material. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Maybe someday they'll make a show that stays true to the source material. Like for example; Attack on Titan followed the comic / or manga to a T. The people who made it had respect for the fanbase and knew what those fans wanted. So that show stayed true to the source material. It's too bad that Warner Brothers didn't feel that way about the fans of this franchise.

But you're acting as if I haven't played Mortal Kombat and aren't familiar with the source material. I have played the games and have seen the original film as well as the sequel. It delivered on what it intended. It introduced the concept of the tournament, showed how they like to blur the lines to cheat to win and they introduced some but not all of the characters. The sequel sounds like it intends to fill in the boxes for what you're looking/hoping for.

I didn't mean to give you that idea. It was more towards the ones that produced the film.

I felt their attempt at what was "intended" was very perfunctory. While you have a very optimistic view of the film. I do not share this notion at all. I'm also not telling you that you're wrong in liking this movie either. I also haven't gone out of my way to hate this movie. I "wanted" to like it and I did make an attempt at doing so. But the end result is that I was very disappointed with the film.

The sequel sounds like it intends to fill in the boxes for what you're looking/hoping for.
I'm not interested. But I would be interested in playing Mortal Kombat 12 when it comes out.

You're more interested in Mortal Kombat 12? A game that literally is the same game with a new coat of paint and a smattering of some new characters they dreamed up. Literally nothing else has changed since the original game I played in high school.

At least they tried something new with the film.
