Has anyone here messed around with a Raspberry Pi? I've always been curious about them but never really looked into it properly. People have built some amazing things with them including emulators and stock market gadgets to keep up with certain tickers.

Back when I was in college doing certificate three in I.C.T I have played around with the first Raspberry Pi :) it had a case and external extension for USB and power for plugging into other things.

All I did was install an OS and config it a little and that's all since it was not mine. It was cool. Aren't that much. Around $100 to get al things needed and then you can turn it into a media streaming system

My husband has talked about using Raspberry Pi for security cameras around the house. It's all a bit above me and I haven't really tried to fully understand all of the technical stuff around this.

It's not really that technical. It's basically just having a dedicated computer you can leave on 24/7 to run the cameras. You basically just need to just install the camera monitoring software on it, and just let it do its thing. The form factor of the Raspberry Pi is nice for this kind of stuff, because you can just stick it in the corner somewhere as opposed to awkwardly having a desktop or laptop sitting somewhere.

well, first to always learn about it, did he end up doing it or have another idea?

I'm ashamed to admit I fall into the realm of those who got a Pi and leaves it to collect dust v_v
I did try to set it up to automate backups of my sites DB but it proved to be more trouble than it was worth. Might take a crack at it again in the future when I have some more free time.
