Using cash

Literally just for my haircut because my barber prefers cash so he doesn't have to pay the card payment fees. I don't tip him either so I always try to make sure I have the exact change for him which becomes annoying

I would say less than once a month.

In thinking about the question I had to expand my time frame because I use cash so infrequently.

Most everything is paid for on no fee credit cards, paid off each month, or electronic debit direct from a checking account.

I carry cash, sometimes using it for tips instead of including the tip on the charge card, or for a ridiculously cheap grocery purchase (I needed a $0.34 cent lime).

Aside from the convenience and ability (via statements) to see how I’m spending my money, I save money by not paying cash. Most merchants have the cost of merchant fees and transaction costs figured into their pricing. Using cash or debit cards helps finance the rewards programs of credit card users.

Now, if you don’t have the spending discipline to pay your card(s) off each month, I don’t recommend my method. All the benefits go out the window when you start paying interest to carry the debt.

How often do you use cash?

Not often. I don't trust myself with cash because I've lost my wallet 3 times before and it had at least a 100 dollars in it at the time. The bank can shut down my card and give me that money back but they won't refund cash that I withdrew and lost.

We still use money over here, not so many things you can pay with cards.

Only at places that don't take cards. lol

I withdraw around $60-$80 per month from the ATM and I treat it like play money, once it's out it's out until the next month. I spend it on various things, gifts, tip, spontaneous purchases really.

I don't normally keep cash on my anymore.

Use to......I'd go get $40 or $50 out of the bank on Friday, or maybe Thursday, just before the weekend officially got here. My hubby called it "flash cash" to use for the weekend to pay for going to the movies or for eating out or whatever we did on the weekends but that was when I use to get the weekends off.

My g/f and I call that "fun money". :D

We always use cash. Don’t believe in credit cards. Only have a debit card which we rarely use. I'm Dutch & while we are not penny-pinchers, we are known to be stubborn & quite frugal. I learned early on to pay cash. We are debt free, mortgage free. Financially secure. We live within our means with only the occasional splurge. Do I think paying with cash helped? Yes. It’s too easy to go over a budget when you use a card. Yes, you may get points & cashback, but if your card is stolen, ALL your money would be stolen via identity theft. Whereas just the money we had in our wallet would be.

Awesome! We are not in too much debt except for school loans. Can't get a credit card due to bad credit rating. But we do a lot of on-line stuff so bank debit cards are handy.

I don't really get this, how do you save money by not using cash?

I've never seen a discount for paying by card, either the price is the same or some places offer a cash discount in my experience.

Maybe it's just because I don't use any cards that have big rewards programs.

For me,, if I'm using just cash, I can't overspend because I'll only bring enough for what I plan to buy. Thus saving money. :)

Banks here for every transaction collect a 5% comission that's why we still use cash. Also the gray market only accepts that.

It really all depends on where in the world you are as well. A few hundred dollars, euro, or pounds in cold hard cash will get you a hell of a lot further in a lot of places than all of the credit cards you can dream of.

The fees for transactions are always included in all the prices anyway so I don't see the point of using cash to try and circumvent that. That's in the UK anyway because you're not going to get a discount for using cash

The little corner shop down the road charges 25p if you use a card to pay for anything less than £5 but nothing for card purchases more than that.

So it's definitely cheaper to buy a pint of milk with cash than a card in there.

Didn't they make that illegal or am I thinking of something else? Feels like they made it where retailers couldn't charge you to use a card but shops just circumvent that by adding a minimum purchase amount or by making things more expensive
