You're driving on a dark empty road and next thing you know you see police lights. A cop now right behind you and is telling you to pull over.

What would you do?

Pull over as long as they are in an official police car. I'll have to check but I think unmarked cars usually wouldn't stop you (in the UK). If they were unmarked, I would be calling 999 and getting them to check if it's a legitimate stop.

I would pull over. Chances are, I know the cop. I live in a very rural setting. I know most of the county deputies and firefighters.

Being from where I am, most folks carry firearms. So most of the time, it would be insane for someone doing it to scam or harm another person, i.e. impersonation. Bigger cities like Chicago and New York, I'm sure that stuff happens a lot there.

I would just pull over. I've always made it the habit of putting my phone on record. No one had ever suggested I do this but I always do. I crack my window open enough to speak to the officer but wait until I'm instructed to show my drivers license and insurance paperwork.

I’ve heard a story about this. The guy said that he was getting pulled over but his wife took a closer look at the cop car that was pulling them over. And it was not a cop. They did not stop and eventually the car stopped following them.

Likewise. There was a guy doing it in my hometown on a road going out into the country. He disguised his car to look like that of a sheriff's. I don't know if he was ever caught. But I saw him out there one day 14 years ago and reported him.

I would panic and speed away on a car chase. They will never be able to catch me.

What would really happen would be if it was a cop car I would pull over.

I never thought that putting my phone on record. That is a good idea.

It's usually very hard for people to "fake" police barriers, regular burglars don't do that, maybe asking powerful people will be more interesting.

THERES A PROPER PROCEDURE FOR THIS:

Pull over in a public area.

Find a well lit area so the officer can see you and you can see the officer. Turn on your hazard lights, slow down, and find the best location available to pull over.

You do not have to roll your window all the way down in order to speak to an officer or give an officer your driver’s license and proof of insurance (but the license and proof of insurance are required to be handed over if an officer asks for them).

You can call 911 and make sure you are being pulled over by an actual officer (if you are unsure due to darkness or the car not being easily recognized as a marked patrol vehicle) while driving slowly with your hazard lights on.

If you suspect the individual is not an actual officer, call 911 immediately and give your location and a description of the suspect and suspect vehicle if visible. Stay on the phone with the 911 operator until an officer arrives to assist you.

As the post above states, I would have just stopped in a well lit area and that would be it. Hoepfully everything would be fine haha

look to see the safest place to pull over and pull over :) then see what the flip is all about regards to why you get a ticket for nothing. Ohh wait, it has happened to me back 10 years ago as a kid. 2 am in the morning doing a 2 hours drive back home in the middle of the night, got pulled over by a young officer just to see if we are not drinking and then about 2mins later he left.
