Plot said:
Diana Prince lives quietly among mortals in the vibrant, sleek 1980s -- an era of excess driven by the pursuit of having it all. Though she's come into her full powers, she maintains a low profile by curating ancient artifacts, and only performing heroic acts incognito. But soon, Diana will have to muster all of her strength, wisdom and courage as she finds herself squaring off against Maxwell Lord and the Cheetah, a villainess who possesses superhuman strength and agility.

Merge this if it's a duplicate thread @Ash. Just wanted to make a thread to remind people that if you have HBO, you can watch it for free through their streaming platform HBO Max tomorrow.

I watched it. It wasn't anything to write home about. I did like the Be Careful What You Wish For trope. It was a way for them to freely do what they wanted in the movie. Which is really lazy writing lol. Like the movie critic, Chris Stuckmann points out. It took this movie 100 + minutes to get off of the ground which is not a good start.

I disagree with said movie critic. I really enjoyed it. It served its purpose for me and I really enjoyed the portrayal of Maxwell Lord, though I was disappointed they changed his powers from mind control/persuasion to wish granting through the origin of an ancient relic.

Though in the end, that's the beauty of film as a medium. People can enjoy different movies and entertainment mediums for different reasons.

Just watched it today with some friends, I thought the movie started out pretty well but seem to go down hill near the end with an ending that seem to fizzle out. I still had no idea what the villain's true goal was or that he was beaten just because he became more wanting of his son. I think the plot could have used a bit more fine-tuning.

What were you confused about the plot? Maxwell Lord wanted more because he started with nothing. He was motivated originally by greed and realized...

Through the granting of wishes thanks to the stone he could take something from everyone, something he desired. He was originally taking one thing to help further his goals. Yes, I will admit the ending seemed kind of lackluster with all of the hype and building up that they did until that point.

Maxwell Lord wanted more because he started with nothing. He was motivated originally by greed and realized...

He realized from Wonder Woman's whip of truth is that his wish was costing him his son. Since the Wishing Stone takes something from you and that cost wasn't worth the mass genocide and the chaos he was wreaking Internationally. He didn't care how many people he hurt or killed. The major problem with the movie was that Max Lord wasn't held accountable and that Cheetah was used as a one and done antagonist. Neither seemed to pay any kind of repercussions for their actions. Not to mention the action was bland and felt very forced into the film. That is the problem people and fans have with this movie.

Eh, to each their own. I enjoyed it for what it was worth. I will say that Cheetah should have had her own film and they should have went with the classic Athena temple story between the two. Maxwell Lord should have been a Justice League villain instead of a Wonder Woman one. I would have loved to see him mind control Superman like in the comics.

He had a recipe for mind control. He was able to buy anyone with his ability to grant wishes. When you can give people anything they want, you have their undivided attention.

The Max Lord I'm referring to obtained the actual power of mind control;

  • Mind Control: Gained from the aftermath of the Dominators invasion, Maxwell Lord was affected by the Gene Bomb's side effect of triggering the dormant metagene in potential hosts. His ability to dominate the wills of others stems from the fallout of the Dominator's occupation of earth. Over the years his powers had been altered but his control over a person remains nigh absolute. Even going so far as to dominate the wills of beings as powerful as Superman on one occasion.[6] Over the coarse of his death and resurrection, Lords power had been altered due to his exposure to the Black and White Lantern powers. Mostly when he tried to control someones thoughts he would end up killing them and morphing their corpse into that of a Black Lantern Cadaver.[7] Once upon his rebirth, Max's reach extended the world over; enabling him to touch the minds of tens of thousands to billions of people all at once.[8]
    • Illusion Casting: Lord could make individuals see, feel and experience whatever he wished them too. So long as his mind was still peculating their perceptions of reality was whatever he desired them to be.[9]
    • Memory Manipulation: Lord could just as easily block out peoples memories as he could control their perceptions of time and relativity, Making people forget certain aspects if he willed them too.[10]
    • Mind Scanning: Max's powers changes in a great many ways in his new life, he could sense and feel the present psyches of every single person on the planet.[10]
    • Modular Wave Manipulation: The Entity had changed Maxwell's powers in such a way that he could now not only interact with sapient thought, but started practicing with a new form of control. Through the help of Professor Ivo, Max decided to focus his powers on the Omactivation Protocol of the dormant O.M.A.C. Virus. Booting up and controlling the xenotech inside of those who possess it within their system.

Sounds like it, yes. I don't know much about Purple Man; but, his powers sound very similar.
