As kids, I think we all loved going to the Zoo or even the Aquarium. But as we grow up, I think a lot of us start to realise that they aren't great and animals really should be in their natural habitats.

Do you think Zoos and Aquariums are good places to allow people to see animals they may never see?

Yes I do. Most zoos and aquariums take in animals that don't have a good a chance at making it on their own in the wild. They're known to rehabilitate injured animals and even set them free again when it makes sense. I don't mind supporting zoos like this especially if it gives people the properly care and study animals so we can continue to do our part in helping animals.

If it's to breed endangered animals etc., then fair enough, but make sure they have a good amount of space! Aquariums, again, if they're trying to breed endangered animals, fair enough, and if it's got a HUGE space for the creatures to swim about then sure, but if they're getting them to do shows and what not in front of an audience then it's really bad and people should not support this.

Also, any animals on their own that are supposed to be in a group or as a couple or whatever, such as lions or elephants etc., then that's also cruel.

We went to the zoo the weekend before last. It was fun.

As long as they don't make this mistake again. I just don't feel like they tried very hard with the Tasmanian Tiger when they had them. The last one died in a zoo. It's like no effort was made in breeding them.

Even so that last one died back in the early to late 60s in a zoon :(

I have been to the Museum in Hobart about the Tigers, so many people think that they are hiding and still alive, Do anyone think that they are around still? I say nope they are not. Tasmania Devils are even at risk and have been taken away to another state to protect them. Far more Tasmania Devils are now north-west of Tas :)

No. These. Tasmanian Tigers. They're extinct. Even though there has been unevidenced sightings much like Big Foot or Lochness.

I know the Tigers are but thought Empire was talking about Tasmanian Devils instead.

It's a pity that they were hunted down and all wiped out. Such a beautiful creature. It would be wonderful news if a few had survived or were successfully cloned.

Very sad what happened to them:

On 7 September 1936 only two months after the species was granted protected status, 'Benjamin', the last known thylacine, died from exposure at the Beaumaris Zoo in Hobart.

However, excessive hunting, combined with factors such as habitat destruction and introduced disease, led to the rapid extinction of the species.

There are different kinds of zoos I guess.

The kind that keep animals for the purpose of people toing to see them and may or may not participate in breeding and conservation.

The kind that exist for conservation and breeding and let people come and see the animals since they are there anyway.

One is great and the other is far less so.

I don't know enough about the conservation ones to comment on them but if they do treat their animals well, I guess it's a good thing. Especially for certain species that are close to extinction. And especially for animals that might have been rescued from bad owners or circuses.

I would say that most zoos and aquariums do more good than harm. From research, breeding, public education, getting children interested in protecting animals, etc. they are aiming and often hit many noble goals that help the wild species in the long run. Not to mention many are helping keep endangered species alive as humans destroy their natural homes.

Sadly, there are always bad apples in the group and ones that simply import endangered species to make money off of. And while I would not encourage this practice and fully support shutting down and limiting bad zoos, you can actually make the point that simply being able to interact with these animals might be that one thing that makes a child want to help the environment and end up doing a greater good.

It's a good point, and of course all kids love zoos. We need to be learn from a young age that there are other creatures we share the planet with and that their lives are important too. We also need to learn that it is not ok to imprison other intelligent creatures for no reason though, and that if we are going to keep them in captivity that they needed to be provided with as much space, and conditions that are close to their natural environment, as possible.
