What are your thoughts about Florida's mandated gag order?

The Republican-dominated Florida legislature passed a bill on Tuesday which would forbid instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade, rejecting a wave of criticism from Democrats that it marginalizes LGBTQ+ people.

The proposal, which opponents have dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, now moves to the desk of the Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, who is expected to sign it into law.

Since its inception, the measure has drawn intense opposition from LGBTQ+ advocates, students, Democrats, the White House and the entertainment industry, amid increased attention on Florida as Republicans push culture war legislation and DeSantis ascends in the GOP as a potential presidential candidate.

“What we really need to be doing is teaching tolerance, caring, loving, anti-discrimination, anti-bigotry. Tell me how this bill does that. Tell me how this bill is helping us create kind, giving, tolerate adults. I don’t see it. I see it as exactly the opposite,” said state senator Tina Polsky, a Democrat.

I'll add it till grade 9 or even more if i could. I'm not in favor of this agenda for so many reasons. There's a fruitful industry over this stuff: trips, entertainment, clothes etc.

We need to teach RESPECT towards other people, stop selling guns and improve society through policies that people can develop themselves in whatever professional areas they can cover. Invest in creating more industries, alternatives of energy sources.. this can't be a serious topic over PERSONAL stuff.. sexual orientation and gender identity is something that IMO can't be "taught" if you're gay i'm sure you'll know without anyone telling you.

I feel that my generation is the last one that decided "freely" about our sexual orientation and gender identity, we weren't influenced by media, movies, maybe some music was "gay" but no one really cared about it. I can't even think about how stupid people are in webs like twitter saying that being straight is an apology to men "superior patriarchy", they invented words like "heteropatriarcado" like being gay is the only way of living. I'm sick of this being SO important nowadays.

Why is this even up for debate? Children go to school to learn the alphabet, numbers, how to communicate with other human beings and be children. They do not go to school to learn about the various sexual identities.

A super worrying part of the bill has to do with prohibiting counselors and teachers from withholding information that a student tells them about their mental health from the parent. This extends through middle and high school. To me this defeats the whole point of a school counselor as a trusting adult you can talk to that isn’t your parents. It’s sort of like mandating that a priest has to tell the parents everything they heard when a kid goes to confession. No chance I would ever talk to a counselor if I knew whatever I said would be relayed to my parents if they asked.

What?? This is a joke right?? You want to teach children in kindergarten about sexuality with out alcohol? Or drugs? These toddlers will vote democrat for sure, hope they pay their taxes and be good at their jobs as well before even knowing their ABC’s. I am so outraged.

I can't believe that a law had to be put into place about this. It's not enough common sense that people shouldn't talk about sex to elementary school children without their parents consent. It's so backward thinking in my opinion. Our energy and resources can be placed in so many other areas and it's instead wasted on matters like this.

I think third grade is a okay grade to teach kids about the community. I was eight years old when I knew I was different. If I had some type of education regarding gender identity (which doesn't even have anything to do with sexual orientation which so many people fail to get that because of lack of education) I wouldn't have felt so alienated. End of story, I don't think kids in Kindergarten, first, or second should be learning this stuff in school, but it's already highly unlikely that a teacher would implement this into their curriculum.

I need clarification about what it actually mandates. The way supporters describe it, all it does it prevent teachers from making lessons about sexuality prior to fourth grade. The way opponents describe it, it prevents teachers from acknowledging the existence of homosexuality, even if the topic comes up organically. If the former is accurate, this is no big deal. If the latter is accurate, this is an attempt to deprive students of accurate information.

Society isn't ready for a lot of things on the cultural left and society probably shouldn't embrace some things on the cultural right. It's a mess really.
