Ukraine

Heh, this is just over oil. Fear the future when there is conflict over water and other base stuff.
Russia will suffer a lot in terms of economy, SWIFT has been taken away, meaning that companies like Gazprom can't sell in Europe, meaning that only China and other socialist states will be their only customers.

Getting worse by the minute-->Putin puts Russia's nuclear forces on alert, cites sanctions

Putin isn’t stupid. He knows what he’s doing, which means he doesn’t care. So, he’s already dying. The existence of our entire species rests upon the highest military brass in Russia not being cowards and ending this. It wouldn't be the first time courageous Russian officers prevented a nuclear war. I'm just saying.

Putin cannot be allowed to carry on in this manor. We should treat him in the exact same way we did Sadam Hussain and his “Weapons of mass distraction”.
Oh I know - which is absolutely appalling. If ever there was a man that needs removing from power, this is it.

I don't think the US can do anything right now. If the US sends troops over to Ukraine, we risk Russia firing off a nuclear warhead and deal with their allies.

President Vladimir Putin took "unprecedented" post-Cold War action Sunday by ordering his nuclear deterrent forces to be on alert as international tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine spiraled.

Putin said in a meeting of top officials shown Sunday on state TV that the move, which means the country’s nuclear weapons are prepared for increased readiness to launch, was in response to NATO powers’ making what he called “aggressive statements.”

Russia, like the U.S. and NATO, has thousands of nuclear warheads that it maintains as a deterrent to an attack.

Be nice to kneecap Russia, but they got plenty of fire power to be a sore loser for sure.

The president of Ukraine currently has a 90% approval rating, that has to be some kind or record. I think he is doing a great job and handling the entire situation about as well as anyone possibly could.

Completely agreed, and what courage to stay in the heart of the capital, knowing he'd be trapped and encircled. A true example for his people, stand and fight. Leadership by example, how rare!

Do not be fooled, Ukraine tried to banish the Russian influence in Ukraine, banning even the Russian language. I know they always had problems with the Russians, but most people there are descendants of former Soviet Russians.. it's a pretty dense subject tbh.

This is about much more than oil. Crimea might have been about oil, but invading Ukraine in its entirety mostly has to do with countering any attempt to include Ukraine into NATO. Controlling important gas pipelines that go through Ukraine (from Russia to the rest of Europe) is just sweetening on the top.

Most Ukrainians are of course descendants of former citizens of the Soviet Unions, but it is not correct that most Ukrainians are descendants of Russians. Most Ukranians are ethnic Ukrainians, not ethnic Russians, and have two distinct historical and cultural backgrounds.

It is a sad situation. I do feel that America is going to have to step in at some point and take a military action against the Russian forces. It might mean another World War. It might mean the use of tactical nuclear weapons. But a people being removed from the earth needs to be stopped at some point. Sanctions are good but at what point do we say, it isn't enough?

I am for American military action against Russian armed forces, personally.

Genuine question: is the point of NATO to deter Russian aggression in general? Or is the point to deter Russian aggression against NATO?

Ukraine isn't a member of NATO.

I wish you all the best and pray that you will all be safe. I wish we in Germany would have helped you more. My wife is from Kyiv and she has a flight scheduled this morning since several weeks and she'll take it. I'm frightened about her safety. I want to join her in March. I wished she would just stay here but I understand she wants to be with her family in Ukraine.
Wow, all the best to your wife, she's so brave heading to Ukraine in the current climate! Hoping for the best for her!
