Have you ever looked at someone's forum and it's absolutely horrible?

And even if they're begging you to join it, you're like......look man, your forum looks bad and there is hardly anything or nothing to post to. I feel like those people should put some effort into it. Give me a real reason why I'd want to join. Don't just grab a plain jane looking forum that has no decoration and say okay everyone, get on over here.

I've seen this plenty of times. It's even worse when the forum just uses the default theme and nothing is changed besides maybe the logo. I dunno, it just doesn't look like the person put much effort into making the community. I get that not everyone is a graphic designer, but there's plenty of themes for all the popular forum software and even for the lesser known software too.

Been there seen it and dealt with it :p

I don't stop me joining if it was or should say a paid job for posting content, I would make a topic with ideals for them to think and look into. I have at times looked at a shocking sight and never joined, and I say to myself ohh god.

Opening your thoughts and mocking them out to the public is not a good idea, at times best is too give them good feedback and tell them nicely about ideals and what they need to improve.

You don't know where that person is at in the process. For all you know, they could have requested a custom design or been waiting on special graphics or they just got busy. Mocking them for trying to start a community, especially in today's highly competitive online corner of the internet, you have to give them props just for trying. I've never outright mocked anyone for their community or how it looks.

That being said, I have my reservations about certain softwares and their user interfaces that will turn me off. The community could be a great one; but, I could be turned off by the type of software they use. Usually I'll give recommendations on what they could improve or make a few threads to help.

Yeah the software is another thing I look at when debating on joining a community. I don't like the structure of modern forum software such as flarum, vanilla, and discourse. It's funny because I also don't like the structure of Reddit, but I still browse it.

I randomly saw this on the latest posts bit of the sidebar and for a second, thought it was about this forum ?

I try not to judge but I have seen a few forums that have just been created for the sake of it and clearly, no effort has been put into trying to make it grow. There was one user who created a different forum (all on free subdomains) every day on a different topic and just expected it to work. Still haven't figured out if he was trying to troll or just didn't know what he was doing.

Yes I agree, however, they've been around so long that they have over xxxxx members, its like bro have you ever heard of Xenforo... and yet they are still popular to this day, I cant even register because its so outdated I don't know where to even start.

Same, people don't like the looks of FB but doesn't stop them being active. I don't like the forum promotion theme and I still being active.

Some people doesn't like paid software, well we all like different things.
(all on free subdomains)
that's the easiest and fast way to go about it and most that do that have no knowledge ;P

Oh I wonder if I know who you're talking about! I remember seeing this person post at least 2 or 3 different forums over at Forum Promotion, all using the same host and the topics were pretty similar. Not really sure why they just didn't focus on one, and all the forums they made looked the same. Barely any effort were put into them, and they posted the same things on each one. :\ I've never seen anything like it before... That again would definitely put me off from joining a forum.

I have said this about few forum who has a very basic theme but have huge no of users and heavy activity buzz. Why can't these forum suck for users so that they could join mine :D

Yet they have people still able to support them, well-doing posting exchanges with them. But one thing that they good at. opening then failed then close

He seemed to focus a lot on a sort of "News Portal" style forum built on Forum Promotion. Does that ring a bell?

Yep that's definitely the guy I was thinking about. I feel like he was banned from another community I was part of... I think it was because he kept promoting his forums.

Yes. I've seen this other persons forum and they've modded hardcore, it's too slow and overly pixelised, hard to stay on it for too long!

I can't remember what his name or site name was ?
I remember his name. Though I don't know if I should post it. :p Let's just say it sounds a lot like google, with the word web in front of it. (Welp I guess I gave it away oops. :V) Also I never did outright tell someone that their forum sucks, but I do try to give constructive criticism. I used to write reviews on Forum Promotion, so I only hope my feedback helped people work on making their communities better.
