I think that she meant that her periods are horrible and doesn't understand how can someone could possibly like the idea of going through the same pain she has every month.

I don't certainly know too much about transgender people and their feelings but anyway, everybody should be respected about how they see themselves :p

Peace!
As I tried to explain to her, trans women are not capable of experiencing periods, though a good number would be more than willing to. If that is the central point of her concerns, then knowing trans women cannot experience periods should alleviate that concern.

I understand that not everyone knows a great deal about trans women, and so I'll volunteer to answer any questions anyone may have if helps clear up misinformation or misunderstandings about what it is to be trans. Granted, I can only speak to my own experiences, but I'll try to help if I can :)

Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on things like surgery and hormone therapy on underaged individuals?

As much as I understand how important surgery is for dysphoria reasons, I don't think it's appropriate for those under 18. Hormone therapy I do agree with, so long as they go through the appropriate therapy courses first, because hormone therapy has a noticeable impact on suicidal thoughts and suicides themselves among those suffering from dysphoria, so I strongly believe in giving them to those who have been through the appropriate therapy courses in order to help them.

I personally disagree with the hormone therapy while they're still going through puberty, but I do agree they should get educated on it first. Though once you turn 18, knock yourself out.

Think about it from someone suffering from dysphoria. You're turning that age where things are starting to change, but they're changing in the wrong way. You're allowed puberty blockers no problem, but all that does is make you look the same, no changes at all, while all of your friends are growing and changing and becoming young men and women, you're just stuck as an amorphous "kid." It plays on your mind as much as dysphoria does, and ultimately, what difference does it make if they start on hormones at the same age their peers are hormonally changing, versus waiting until they're 18? So long as they're in therapy, doing what they need to do to understand that this is what they need, and that it continues to be what they need as they go through it, then it should be given to them at the appropriate age, IMO. Then they can grow up as the boy or girl they are, with their peers. To deny them that is to leave them ostracized and stuck in between two genders, one they can't relate to, and one they're being denied the chance to relate to.

I guess it’s because I’ve seen stuff talking about the side effects of doing hormone therapy early. So if you want to do a phalloplasty, your penis will be too small for the procedure because the hormones stunted the growth. So it was something to consider ahead of time if you want to do the procedure.

It's a definite risk, but they can graft from other places to do achieve the same result. I admit, I'm a little sketchy on the details for phalloplasty, but I believe it's the same, just extract from other areas.

I have been avoiding this thread because I didn't think that it was going anywhere and I didn't want to be drawn into a pointless argument. I've now read @Terminated 's actions and to be honest I'm feeling a little guilty about it.

But I am also willing to have conversation and discussion about gender. I'm running about and really busy today but I will also add my thoughts on the questions above a bit later.

Actually got my terms backwards, the vaginoplasty. What’s what I meant. Whoops. The phalloplasty is where a penis is constructed from skin grafts from your arm and leg. I was thinking of the procedure to create a vagina.

From what I’ve seen, the canal (I don’t know my terms) is made from the inverted penis. So many doctors won’t do it if it’s too small, usually due to a condition of micro penis, or you started hormone therapy too early.

You don't need to feel guilty, it wasn't your actions that were out of line, at all.

Ah, well, yeah, there are some doctors who won't perform the vaginoplasty, but will apply graft the required skin from elsewhere. I can reference Jazz Jennings in this instance, as she went through puberty blockers and hormone therapy early, had a very small penis and had a successful vaginoplasty.

I guess I wasn’t up to date on Jazz, I recalled them denying the procedure, though I guess I didn’t see where they eventually got around to it.

Yeah, it happened on or very near her 18th birthday, she even went on to post pictures of her in a bathing suit showing the scars from where they took additional grafts.

That’s cool. Might be a newer procedure and the other doctors she talked to weren’t trained on it, or knew about it.

Quite possible, medical technology is constantly advancing!

Jazz’s initial incident wasn’t the only one, it was just the more famous one. So it was situations like that was why I was concerned about starting hormone therapy at a really young age.

Idk if they do this, but have an educational portion where there’s say a roadmap of possible side effects of starting the therapy during puberty, and how that affects the surgical route if you plan on doing that later on.

I don't want to share too much about that particular user because it would be unfair but you shouldn't feel guilty. Just so you and anyway else that is interested is aware, this was not the only infraction and previous infractions and warnings contributed to this decision :)

Proper education definitely should be a part of the process if it isn't already, agreed. It's important to have as much information and communication as possible.
